The Legendary 1979 Offer: International Harvester's Tractor and Scout Combo

The International Harvester Scout is celebrated as one of the pioneering American SUVs, expertly crafted to conquer both rugged landscapes and city streets. Launched in 1961, this vehicle quickly earned its reputation as an icon of durability and adaptability, making it a favorite among outdoor lovers and adventure seekers. In a clever marketing move in 1979, International Harvester enhanced their appeal by bundling their renowned tractors with the purchase of a Scout. Customers who bought an International tractor received a complimentary Scout, a bold testament to the brand's faith in their vehicles' capability to excel in both farming and off-road adventures.

A Nod to the Past with an Eye on the Future

The return of the Scout is more than just an EV revolution-it's a revival of an iconic nameplate with deep cultural and historical significance. The original International Harvester Scout became a legend for its durability and off-road prowess. Now, Volkswagen is breathing new life into that legacy with a modern twist, offering today's drivers the chance to enjoy a vehicle that's both steeped in tradition and packed with cutting-edge technology.

Volkswagen is committed to sustainability, and the Scout will be a flagship for this effort. By delivering a high-performance EV that stays true to its rugged roots, Volkswagen aims to provide a vehicle that appeals to both off-road enthusiasts and environmentally conscious consumers. This balance between heritage and innovation is what makes the new Scout truly special.

Rugged Yet Refined: Scout’s New Traveler SUV and Terra Pickup

The new Scout lineup combines retro cues with a futuristic, functional design. Built on a bespoke body-on-frame chassis, these vehicles break from traditional VW platforms. The solid rear axle and independent front suspension setup provide over a foot of ground clearance, enhancing its rugged capability with a max wading depth of 36 inches - perfect for explorers craving off-road adventures. The Terra pickup also brings a unique 5.5-foot bed and a remarkable towing capability of up to 10,000 lbs, while the Traveler SUV offers 7,000 lbs of towing power, making both versatile choices for hauling and heavy-duty use.

Power and Innovation: All-Electric and Range-Extended Options

Both Scout models will run on powerful all-electric systems with four-wheel drive via an electric motor at each axle, producing up to 1000 lb-ft of torque. The anticipated 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds shows that Scout is blending muscle with EV efficiency. Scout's commitment to adventurous sustainability means the trucks are designed with optional 35-inch tires and locking front and rear differentials, with the Terra pickup also offering sway-bar disconnect for rougher terrain. Built to go far from civilization, Scout offers an innovative range-extender model called "Harvester," allowing up to 500 miles per charge by using a small internal-combustion engine as a generator for the battery.

Next-Level Charging and Technology

The Scout lineup embraces the North American Charging Standard (NACS) and a high-voltage 800-volt architecture, ensuring rapid charging with speeds up to 350 kW. The versatile bed of the Terra model also supports remote needs, equipped with two 120-volt outlets and one 240-volt outlet to power job site tools or tailgating gear, making Scout a multi-purpose asset wherever the journey takes you.

Retro-Inspired Design, Modern Interiors

Design-wise, Scout models honor the classic International Harvester look with a sleek, boxy shape, but they also take bold steps into the future with a refined American 4x4 aesthetic. Interiors are upgraded for today's drivers with top-tier materials, spacious layouts, and large screens. Keeping it practical, Scout is going for a tactile approach with physical buttons, ensuring that the interior remains user-friendly even in tough conditions. Plus, over-the-air updates mean Scout will keep advancing, offering new features over time.

Be a Part of the Scout's Return

Reservations for the Scout Traveler and Terra are open, requiring a $100 refundable deposit to secure your spot. Starting around $60,000 before federal tax credits, Scout's American-made lineup will be produced in South Carolina, where they're building a dedicated plant to bring Scout's iconic power back to life. Production is set to begin in 2027, allowing Scout fans to prepare for the ultimate American EV adventure.
